Integrate flavors and aroma of ingredients in a way that the metal blades of a blender or food processor simply can't with the authentic Artisan Molcajete.
Made by Mexican artisans from natural lava stone, the molcajete is derived from rich culinary traditions, with the ability to extract the depth of flavor from something as simple as a store-bought tomato.
Take control of texture and merge flavors in a way that elevates your culinary pursuits to the next level. No matter what blend of flavor and spice you choose, the mortar is large and heavy enough to handle big batches of guacamole, pesto, or salsa — and works overtime as a serving dish thanks to the sleek flecked stone and clean details.
- Crafted from 100% pure stone
- Authentic representation of Mexican history and craftsmanship
- Perfect for crushing whole spices and making spice blends.
- Ideal for blending and serving guacamole – or for making pesto and other rustic sauces.
- Rough interior texture of mortar helps crush and grind ingredients.

Just like cast iron, molcajetes need to be cured, or “broken in”. Small grains of the rock can loosen from the surface when it's first used, giving your food a gritty texture. Curing helps smooth the surface.
Here’s what we recommend for curing before first use:
1.) Rinse the molcajete with water (or let soak in water overnight), then clean with a wire brush, or toothbrush, to get rid of surface debris and dust.
2.) Place enough rice to make an even layer across the bottom of the molcajete.
3.) Pour in about a tablespoon of water, then use the pestle to work the rice up and around the entire inner surface of the molcajete until the rice has formed a grey paste.
4.) Rinse out the paste, and repeat the rice grinding until the resulting paste is no longer grey.
5.) You can then repeat with garlic, onion, cumin seeds, rock salt, or cilantro to add a seasoned flavor before your first use.
Hand-wash with running water, dish soap and brush. Dry thoroughly.
Traditional Guacamole Recipe
2 tbsp onion
1 tsp jalapeno
1 tbsp cilantro
3/4 tsp salt
Directions: Chop onion, jalapeno, and cilantro. Add onion, jalapeno, and cilantro to molcajete, along with the salt and the juice of one lime. Grind into a paste using the tejolote, or pestle. Add the peeled avocados, and use the tejolote to combine. Add more salt or another squeeze of lime to taste. Serve immediately with warm tortilla chips or on tacos, burritos, or tostadas.
